Sustainable Future for Leech Lake, Minnesota

This initiative utilizes a "geo-design" approach to foster community-led innovation and economic growth on the Leech Lake Reservation. The project integrates Indigenous knowledge with modern Geographic Information Science (GIS) to address local challenges and develop a visualized master plan that is both culturally relevant and ecologically sound. A core goal is to empower the local community, particularly youth, by providing them with high-level geospatial skills through dedicated workshops.

Currently in its foundational phase, the project is building a comprehensive geospatial database for the Leech Lake territory while launching GIS training at the Deer River Tech Hub. These efforts lay the groundwork for future participatory mapping and co-design workshops. Ultimately, the project aims to establish a replicable planning model that can be utilized by other underserved rural and Native American communities to navigate sustainable long-term development.
