GeoCommunities Collaborative Approach to Global Challenges

GeoCommunities is dedicated to tackling real-world challenges through community-driven research and innovation. We believe that local communities understand their challenges best, and by working together with researchers, government agencies and non-profit organizations, we can develop scientifically sound, actionable solutions that lead to long-term, positive change.

Our work addresses a wide range of pressing issues, including water security, climate resilience, infrastructure development, and sustainable resource management. Every project is designed not only to meet the immediate needs of a specific community but also to generate knowledge and solutions that can be scaled for broader application and applied in other communities facing similar challenges.

GeoCommunities is a collaborative initiative led by the University of Minnesota (UMN) and the University at Buffalo (UB), in partnership with top research institutions in India. These institutions bring world-class expertise in geodesign, geospatial technologies, climate resilience, clean energy, and community-driven research.

University of Minnesota (UMN)

As a leader in geospatial technologies and sustainability research, UMN brings cutting-edge expertise in mapping, satellite imaging, machine learning, and environmental science. The university has a strong track record of working with local communities to develop data-driven, place-based solutions that address pressing environmental and social challenges.

University at Buffalo (UB)

UB contributes expertise in artificial intelligence, data science, and geospatial research, playing a key role in advancing technology-driven solutions for community resilience. With a focus on machine learning applications for sustainability, UB is at the forefront of using AI to address social and environmental challenges.

Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK)

IIT Kanpur specializes in clean energy, environmental sustainability, and social development research. The institution has led groundbreaking projects on microgrids for rural electrification, low-cost clean water technology, and sustainable agriculture, ensuring that communities have access to affordable, locally viable solutions.

Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB)

IIT Bombay brings expertise in urban planning, sustainable infrastructure, and geospatial analysis. The institution has been instrumental in developing climate-adaptive strategies for cities and rural areas alike, ensuring that communities are equipped to handle environmental challenges.

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD)

With a focus on climate resilience, energy efficiency, and sustainable infrastructure, IIT Delhi contributes critical research on carbon capture, renewable energy, and water resource management. Their work supports communities in adapting to climate change while maintaining economic stability.

Indian Institute of Technology Goa (IITG)

IIT Goa plays a key role in environmental monitoring, water quality assessment, and land use planning. By applying geospatial technologies and remote sensing, IITG helps communities make informed decisions about natural resource management and sustainable development.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham is a multi-campus university in India that leads community-driven research through its Live-in-Labs® Program. This initiative sends researchers and students into rural communities to co-develop solutions in areas such as water purification, sustainable farming, and renewable energy.
